Rijsel – A modern French/Flemish Classic in Amsterdam

One of my all time favorites, Rijsel is a classy yet modern French restaurant, famous for their rotisserie chicken and Côte de Boeuf nights.

You can not go wrong with Rijsel in Amsterdam Oost. This restaurant was founded in 2012 when hotspots like Rijsel opened which then were called ‘nouveau ruig’, which roughly translates to the new rough. However, after seeing too white table cloth many restaurants open where everything had to be perfect, Rijsel was welcomed by the people of Amsterdam. This place is all about good ingredients, turned into great food.

Their menu changes daily, but a classic that has been on the menu since the beginning is the rotisserie chicken. Which is perfectly cooked and served with a simple salad on the side. Add some amazing wines and a bottle of Badoit. That’s all you need.

They once served an ‘illegal Calvados’ which was brought to Amsterdam in a case of oysters from France, which was great.

Bib gourmand

Rijsel also hasn’t been unnoticed to the critics of Michelin. They awarded the restaurant with a Bib Gourmand for 2020.

Rijsel is sometimes a bit hard to get into. Making a reservation in time (usually a few weeks ahead) is key. In addition, you’ll find me here occasionally on Friday evenings with a bottle of Côtes du Rhône. If there’s no table available tonight, check out these other restaurants in Amsterdam Oost.
