UPDATE: They now run an amazing restaurant too! Another reason to take the ferry to Noord.
A few years ago, Noord wasn’t a fun place to be. Sure, there was a museum, some good restaurants, but all far apart from each other, so you would never just ‘hang out’ in Noord. Fast forward to 2020, when all the new hip places are opening on the Noord side of the IJ river. In an area where there are new apartments being built at a very high pace, there’s Public Space. An amazing coffee bar that’s ready for the future.
The first thing that Public Space reminded me of was coffee bars in London or New York where people value great coffee and people get together for coffee, or to get some work done. The well designed interior consists of concrete walls, vintage furniture and green plants.
It’s safe to say that Public Space is laptop-friendly. They offer high speed wifi and enough coffee to get you going. If you’re planning on staying longer; they also offer half-day and full-day passes that include drinks, homemade snacks and lunch. So no need to feel bad about sticking around for the whole day.
Coffee
First things first. The coffee is great. They serve coffee from different (micro) roasters including my Amsterdam favorite: Friedhats.
Their coffee menu is ultimately simple. If you can imagine it, they will make it. It’s either black coffee, or white coffees. Just ask for one their multiple filter coffees, a flat white, cappuccino, espresso, cortado, macchiato… And they’ll make you one with your beans of choice.
And then there is the food. The bread that they serve is made in the Public Space bakery. Who also make great kanelbulle (cinnamon buns). The rest of the food (pumkin and kale, smoked tofu and garlic sage butterfly chicken to name a few) is supposed to be great too, but I haven’t had the chance to try that out yet.
Public Space is one of my favorite places to spend an hour or two while getting some work done and having a flat white with a fresh pastry. Just around the corner of the Eye Filmmuseum, in a residential area that is still developing, Public Space is a great addition to Noord that is ready for the future. And the future is happening in Noord.
